Local Projects

Backyard Project

For all ages

The Backyard Project seeks to give assistance and companionship to those who need it in our community.

DRIVE volunteers visit the elderly, sick or disabled in their homes, helping them with household tasks and spending time with them. We find that it is the quality time spent chatting and listening that is most valued by both volunteers and those receiving volunteers into their homes.

Weekly visits on Saturdays 1-4pm

Totara Hospice

For uni students and Young Professionals

Totara Hospice is a palliative-care organisation with the vision that “all people have access to quality end-of-life care and support when they need and wherever they need it.” It is run on the good-will of volunteers and doesn’t cost the patients a penny. It is an incredible organisation and a true place of comfort, peace and dignity.

DRIVE volunteers help in the In-Patient-Unit at Totara Hospice. This can involve anything from serving meals, cleaning, making-up new beds or spending time with patients.

For more information about Totara Hospice, you can visit their website here:http://www.hospice.co.nz/

Monthly visits

Working with the disabled

Rescare runs lifestyle communities for people with intellectual disabilities. DRIVE currently has two volunteer initiatives at Rescare:

Visits
Volunteers visit residents, help with recreational activities such as craft and nail-painting, and assist residents with simple tasks such as going for a walk or pushing the wheelchair.

Discos
Volunteers put on discos for the Rescare residents. This is a chance to make someone’s day and also have a fantastic time (and workout)!

Refugee Support and Relief

For all ages

This initiative aims at providing assistance to newly-arrived refugees, and includes tutoring school children, helping families prepare homes and, on the whole, making the difficult transition to a new country easier.

DRIVE runs school holiday programs for the children living in Monte Cecilia House. Volunteers entertain the children with games, craft and baking. For more info about Monte Cecilia Housing Trust you can visit  http://www.montececilia.org.nz/
